Biographie
Am 15. Mai 1951 geboren, lernt Jonathan Richman mit 15 Jahren Gitarre zu lernen und nicht mal ein Jahr später hat er seine ersten Auftritte. 1969 zieht er nach New York, schafft es jedoch nicht mit seinen Songs wirklich Fuß zu fassen. 1970 kehrt er nach Boston zurück und gründet "seine" Band The Modern Lovers. Sie nehmen zusammen einige Demos auf und produzieren 1973 mit John Cale ihr Debütalbum, welches jedoch vom Label erst 1976 veröffentlicht wird. Während dieser Zeit löst Richman die Band auf und formiert sie 1977 mit anderer Besetzung wieder neu. Im selben Jahr erscheint das erste Album und später haben sie mit Egyptian Reggae einen Hit in Europa. 1979 ist Richman dann wieder solo unterwegs und veröffentlicht Back in Your Life. Danach zieht er sich zurück und taucht 1983 mit Jonathan Sings! wieder auf. Weitere Alben, mit und ohne The Modern Lovers folgen, 1990 veröffentlicht er ein Country-Album, drei Jahre später erscheint ein Album auf Spanisch. Im Laufe der Jahre hat er eine treue Fangemeinde gewonnen. Er tritt häufig bei Conan O'Brien auf und spielt den kommentierenden Straßenmusiker in There's Something About Mary. Nebenbei erscheinen weiterhin Alben, 2004 erscheint das bisher letzte Not So Much to Be Loved as to Love.
